Working as an auditor I’ve been to many different companies’ offices. There is one thing almost all of them have in common: corporate cookie/pastry/biscuit bowls, pizza Fridays, coffee breaks with small sandwiches and biscuits, and biscuits again. One client company even had “cookies for auditors” box 🙂 As a research student I saw this coffee breaks again and again at seminars, conferences and workshops. It is cheap, it is satisfying and it is an office stress absorber.
Coffee break with a cookie is a moment of pleasure in a stressful office day, but what happens next? What happens if your employees eat high sugar, wheat-, gluten-, transfat-rich food on a regular basis? What happens if they do not consume enough important micronutrients to protect their bodies? As a short-term effect, their productivity falls down, energy levels drop, mood swings. Mid-term – they gain fat and become less happy. It is no joke to spend your annual bonus for a wardrobe one size up! Long term – their health weakens and they take sick leaves more often.
How much better solution would be, for instance, a vegetable bowl instead of one full of biscuits? Vegetables are rich in vitamins, antioxidants, fiber. It is a long-term investment in your human recourses and increase in efficiency.
